COACHING INSTITUTES DOP

The rat race has begun........
With new comers tending towards Engineering education many coaching institutes are coming to their rescue. Coaching institutes in India for AIEEE, IITJEE etc are growing in number significantly.
The coaching institutes in India claims high success ratio in newspapers and other form of advertisements with photos of many students with their ranks. They do so to lure more and more students into their institutes. It is highly advisable to follow up and verify the truthfulness of their claims. Always bear one thing in mind that hefty fees do not guarantee higher ranks. Some folks are tempted to think that since so and so institute is demanding bulky price for their coaching they must be offering international standard coaching. They are wrong in thinking so.
It is imperative to consider some factors before plunging into selection of apt coaching institute for Engineering.
Study Material:
The various coaching institutes in India for IIT/AIEEE provide dissimilar and discrete study materials for assistance in studies.
But it is important to look into the depth of these study materials and to confirm that the so called unique study materials are really unique or just copy pasted from other books.  It is also vital to double check coaching institutes for collection of good quality and edifying books.
It is imperative to choose a coaching institute which provides you appropriate guidance and offers you individual special attention.
Test Series:
Coaching institutes in India for Engineering Entrance also have a series of mock tests and evaluations which help students to identify their strength and weaknesses. It is very imperative to track the progress of every student to make him fit for the entrance exam. All the endeavors are reliant up on the student's aptitude and attentiveness on important studies.
It is also significant to check the faculties of the coaching institute you are wondering to join. Faculties which are alumni of reputed institutions can proffer you in depth insights into the entrance exam patterns.
Competitive Environment: It is very crucial to create a competitive environment in institutes to keep students motivated all the times. The foremost thing to be focused in this direction is forming batches of reasonable strength to ensure that every student gets ample time to interact with faculty. There should be some special sessions at institutes to address students’ queries regarding critical aspects other than exams like Group Discussions/Personal Interview.
Considering all these factors EC(Entrance Corner) is going to prepare a report on the Coaching institutes to help new comers in choosing the institute that suits them the most with the help of ECians.........we request ECians to come up for the same and give your feedbacks for the institutes you have studied in on the newly started thread under Coaching Institute:

DCE BECOMES DTU

Ques. We are confused about the name, has it been changed to DTU?
Ans. The Delhi Act to upgrade
DCE into DTU has been passed by the Delhi Assembly and has received the accent of the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Delhi. However, the formal upgradation of DCE into DTU will come into effect only after the notification
by the Government of Delhi to this effect as per the usual procedure. This may happen any time in the next few days.
Ques. We want to know something about the affiliation
of college with DU, will the current enrolled students will get a DU degree?
Ans.
The existing students currently enrolled with the DU shall continue to be enrolled with DU and will be governed by the same syllabi, course scheme and ordinances of DU as applicable to them as at present. The examinations for such students will be conducted as per the practice being followed in the previous semesters. Such students will receive the degree from Delhi University.
The Clause 4(e) of DTU Act protects the interest of the existing students
and their continuation with DU.
Ques. Kindly give some information about the increase in the number of seats and new branches added.
Ans.
Once DTU comes into existence and becomes operational, DTU shall launch 4 new B. Tech programs with 240 new intake,
7 M. Tech programs (18 seats each) and MBA in Knowledge and Innovation Management. In addition 50 Ph.D scholarships shall also be added including 25 teaching-cum-research fellowships. All this is as per the proposal for increase in intake this year, 2009-10 academic session under DTU.
Ques. Will all the new branches and new seats be filled this year only or will this change be applied from next year?
Ans.
Yes, the new branches and new seats will be filled this year. The Modalities in this respect will be decided by the DTU authorities once DTU becomes operation. It is hoped that the new seats will be available
from the current academic session.
Ques. Is any other college, under DTU? What about NSIT? Is it covered
in DTU or it will remain affiliated to DU?
Ans.
The Act of DTU has the provision for constituent colleges and campuses under DTU. As far as NSIT is concerned it is not under DTU at the moment nor there is any plan as far as we are concerned.
Ques. If the changes are applied this year only? How will the seats will be filled, as there was no option for them in the application form?
Ans.
I have also clarified under
Serial No. – 4, there will be separate advertisement for the new seats and these will be filled strictly on merit and through admission procedure
as decided by the DTU.
Ques. Will OBC quota be applied this year?
Ans.
As far as the OBC quota is concerned, the matter is under active consideration with the Government of Delhi.
The admission to OBC and other reserved quota such as SC and ST will be made on receipt of the Reservation Policy from the Government of Delhi.
Ques. Will the fee structure will go high, if yes then will it be applicable for all the students or only the freshers?
Ans.
It appears that some mischief mongers are unnecessarily creating
confusion in the student community about the fees. DTU being the University established by the Government of Delhi will follow the norms for fee etc., as decided from time to time in line with other professional Universities such as GGSIPU. There is no proposal to increase the fees of the students who are already enrolled.
Ques. Will the syllabus will be revised? If so then who will study the new course?
Ans.
Yes, the DTU shall provide the updated and innovative
curriculum to its students right from this year. The curriculum of BE courses under DU has not been updated for the last 20 years or so. DTU will ensure that curriculum of its UG/PG program is regularly updated
and that the feedback from the students, faculty and our stakeholders is taken into account while revising
the syllabus.
DTU aims at providing curriculum in line with the very best technical Universities in the India and abroad. We firmly believe that in the new knowledge age, no University can afford the luxury of providing an outdated
curriculum.
Ques. Will present students have to continue all the administrative processes like registration, examination, result with DU only or DTU will take care of the same?
Ans.
The existing students shall continue to be governed by the same course scheme and ordinances and procedures as was being followed in the previous semesters under DU.

IIT-Kharagpur kept aside illegal quota for staff [ 88 Students through the secret quota between 1998 and 2005 ]

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was secretly — and illegally — keeping aside a discretionary admission quota for children of its teachers and staff for over four decades, admitting dozens of students to seats they failed to secure through the IIT-Joint Entrance  Examination.
Documents accessed by HT using the RTI Act show the country’s oldest IIT — started in 1951 — blocked 25 per cent of its seats in popular five-year integrated science courses (up to M.Sc level) for handpicked nominees, even as students from the rest of India had to clear the IIT-JEE for admission.
IIT wards merely needed 60 per cent marks in their Class XII Board examination and should have appeared in the IIT-JEE to be eligible for the quota seats, doled out at the institute director’s discretion.
Between 2003 and 2005, those who got in through this illegal quota didn’t even need to appear for the entrance exam.
The secret quota was suspended in 2005, the year the RTI Act was launched, and was abandoned in 2006 under pressure from the Joint Admission Board of all IITs, which organises entrance examination.
“This was the most shameful chapter in the history of the IITs. I tried convincing colleagues to end the quota, but failed,” said a former IIT Kharagpur director who was in charge for several years when the quota was in place.
The IIT admitted 88 students through the secret quota bet-ween 1998 and 2005, including 50 in 2003 and 2004, documents reveal. The quota was never disclosed in admission brochures — unlike all other reservations for backward communities that the IITs have.
The beneficiaries of the secret quota include the children of Madhusudan Chakraborty, now the Director of IIT Bhubaneswar and VK Tewari, the organising chairman of the IIT-JEE in 2006. Chakraborty, who has also been deputy director of IIT Kharagpur, confirmed the discretionary quota to HT but argued: “Not only my son, the sons and daughters of many others in the faculty were also admitted through this quota.”
The IIT has not disclosed exactly when the quota was started, but minutes of an August 16, 1988 board of governors meeting reveal that the quota existed even before the IIT-JEE was started in the mid-1960s.

NTSE

Identification of talent comprises a three-stage selection process. While the individual state or union territory conducts the first stage selection, the second stage selection at the national level is carried out by the NCERT, usually on the second Sunday of May. This is followed by the interview of the selected 1500-1600 students.

[edit] Eligibility

Before 2006, all students studying in Class X in any type of recognized school were eligible to appear at the state level examination from the state in which the school is located. The state could impose any other eligibility condition for appearing in the screening examination like any qualifying percentage of marks in the previous annual examination, etc. But from 2006 onwards, a separate examination for Class VIII has started. More than 1,50,000 students appear for the screening examination of the NTSE every year.
From 2008-2009 National Talent Search examination will be held only for class VIII

[edit] State level examination

The state level examination has two parts for nominating the required number of candidates for the second level test to be conducted by the NCERT.
  • Part-I:Mental Ability Test (MAT), and
  • Part-II: Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

[edit] National level examination

Candidates acquiring more than the required percentage in the state level examination and within a specified number of top ranks (state quota) are eligible to appear for the national level examination. NCERT conducts the National Level NTS each year in the 2nd week of May for about 3000 candidates. The national level examination has two parts for nominating the required number of candidates for the interviews to be conducted by the NCERT:
  • Part-I:Mental Ability Test (MAT), and
  • Part-II: Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)(with questions on history, civics, geography, rarely economics, maths, physics, chemistry and biology.)
It is usually conducted on 1st or 2nd sunday in may.

[edit] Interview

Candidates acquiring more than the required percentage in the national level examination and standing in about top 1500-1600 students across India and abroad are eligible to appear for the interview. The interview pattern is based on the regular courses, that is the general subjects taught in the schools like science, history, geography , civics etc. It must be noted that the questions asked may be related to theoretical parts of the subjects and may not be just general questions. It is advised to study the school curriculum carefully. Students should also have extra information of higher classes to excel. Normally you must concentrate on SAT rather than MAT because there they may test your understanding.

[edit] Syllabus

There is no Prescribed syllabus for the NTSE examination. However, the standard of items conforms to the level of CBSE Class 8 Public Examinations. Also, parts of classes IX and X are also included.

[edit] Scheme of Testing

The scheme of testing is given below:
Test Duration No. of Items Maximum Marks Qualifying Marks(General) Qualifying Marks(SC/ST/PC)
Mental Ability Test (MAT) 90 minutes 90 (90 MCQ, i.e. with options) 100 40 32
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) 90 minutes 90 (90 MCQs , i.e. with options)-35 MCQs on Science, 20 MCQs on Mathematics and 35 MCQs on Social Science 100 50 32
Interview 15–20 minutes
25 Not defined Not defined
According to NTSE 2009 final results, the cut-off marks for general category stood at 155/225 (200 for written test+25 for interview), for SC-122/225, for ST-118/225 and for PC/disabled-72/225.

The students who qualify all the stages of NTSE successfully are eligible for scholarship. The amount of scholarship has been enhanced to Rs. 500/- per month for all the students studying in Class VIII onwards except for Ph.D., wherein it is paid according to UGC norms. The older system of book grant has been removed. The criterion of parental income for deciding payment of scholarship has also been discontinued.

TIPS FOR BATSAT

Keep it simple
As you are required to solve 150 questions in 180 minutes, the difficulty of questions is kept low & they are framed so as to be solved quickly. Speed and accuracy both hold important. I suggest you to be at ease, relax, keep confident and work at your natural speed. A conscious effort to increase speed may lead to a poor accuracy. Also, DON’T KEEP YOUR EYES FIXED ON THE WATCH, it will only create panic.
About the questions
Books Suggested: NCERTs
As far as individual subjects are concerned – in PCM, the questions are mostly straight forward and directly formula based. All you have to take into consideration is you should never start attempting a question blindly, go for it only if you are sure that you can do that particular question  (the same rule that holds validity for your JEE too). For English there is no short cut. At most, you can cover it up by scoring in other sections. In chemistry, either you’ll directly know the answer, or the question seems to have been dropped from an alien world (especially with inorganic). This might happen if questions are framed from old Chemistry NCERT as the BITSAT question bank hasn’t changed much with the change in CBSE syllabi (at least not in 2008). I believe you should not panic seeing such questions because if they are out-of-syllabi for you, it’s the same for others as well, so it’s not just you who can’t answer such questions.
Still if you want to know if such questions have been removed or not, try the following:
  • Checking up syllabus of Chemistry on BITS website & matching it with the two NCERTs (2006-07 & 2007-08).
  • Consulting friends who have already appeared for their BITSAT.
Oh yes, do remember to go through Stereochemistry from old NCERT.
Preparing for the exam
Don’t take a date too early or too late. If you take it too early, you tend to get panicky that you are short of time for revision, and if it goes far too late, you acquire a feeling of frustration. Now this is what I’ve observed generally, you should choose according to your potentials and habits.
Try to make most of the decisions at home. Decide exactly in which order you will attempt the four sections. If you have practiced a full practice test you will be in a better position to decide the order (my order was Physics–>Mathematics—>English–>LR–>Chemistry; and I chose this order because I was most confident in physics, out of the 4, so decide that way).
When you solve the paper don’t make wild guesses. Answer only those questions about which you are sure. And the questions which leave you in little doubt, mark them for review and move ahead. Don’t linger over such questions.
Bonus questions
Let me come to Bonus Questions now. Should one opt for them? You can’t decide this beforehand. There are some conditions which you should analyze while you are giving the exam. After your first ‘non-wild-guesses’ session of attempting is over, quickly answer all those questions which you have marked for review and you think can be answered. After that, count the number of questions still left unmarked. Now you have to analyze three things together:
  • Time.
  • Negative marking you may get on incorrectly answering the unattempted questions.
  • The marks you think you will definitely get out of those twelve questions in the given time.
Go for bonus questions only if you have less unanswered questions. My suggestion for time is [18 + (no. of Questions unmarked/3)] minutes.
Quick Tips
  • “Paper is going to be very easy” – don’t carry this mindset. Though true it leads to a poor performance.
  • Do not loose your temper an don’t panic when you fall behind time.
  • Do practice one or more full length papers.
  • Prefer morning time for exam.
At the end, believe me, luck plays a very crucial role and it may affect your score by 10%. Rest, keep it cool, and have FAITH IN YOURSELF.
Best of Luck.

AIEEE Counseling has design flow Error - Jackpot for Lower Rankers . AIEEE should take action

Don't Wonder if 40k Ranker gets NIT Warangal Metallurgical Engineering and student with 15k does not, Want to Know how, read this - AIEEE has brought Jackpot for Lower Rankers
Last year seats were blocked by the higher rankers due to which multiple rounds happened in AIEEE counseling as there was no risk of money or allotted seat to participate in newer rounds of counseling. So this time AIEEE committee has made some changes in the procedure. Major changes:
  • The students who have not been allotted any seat by the 3rd round will participate for 4th round.
  • If a student who has already been allotted a seat in any institute wants to participate in the 4th round of counseling he will have to give up his seat that he has been allotted by the 3rd round of counseling.
  • If a student does not want to give up he can only participate for the branch up gradation in the institute where he has been allotted a seat only in the 4th round.
This design has definitely decreased number of rounds compared to last year counseling but has introduced a major error-where a lower ranker can get better option than higher ranker.
Let us analyze HOW???
Participating students in the 4th round of counseling:
Type1: Those who have not been allotted any seat (majority will be of lower rankers)
Type 2: Those who take risk of their allotted seat (again majority will be of lower rankers, very few students who have good options will participate)
Type 3: Those who apply for branch up gradation (almost everyone else-if interested)

Case 1:
Now suppose some seats in CSE/ECE etc gets vacant at NIT Trichy for the 4th round  and similarly in other top NITs who have the students with highest ranks, these seats will definitely be grabbed by the Type 3 students (mostly) this will create lapsed seats in the lower branches of top NITs.
But now who has the chance to get these lapsed seats, Type 1 and Type 2 students who are mainly students with low ranks. So finally we will see lower rankers has entered top NITs and good rankers in other NITs  could not grab top NITs seats as they can only upgrade  within the allotted institute.

IPU 2010 - Seats In the Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology would be Available in the 2nd Round of Counseling

Consequent upon the directions of the Hon'ble Court 28th July 2010 in the written petition no. 4950 of 2010, seats in the Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology would be available in the second round of counseling. The schedule for the 2nd counseling would be displayed on the university website.

AIEEE 2010 - Guidelines for Choice Filling of 5th round

CHOICE FILLING GUIDELINES AND FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) ABOUT FIFTH ROUND
Who can participate in the fifth round?
Those registered candidates who have not got any seat till fourth round or those who surrendered a seat after the third round and did not get any seat in the fourth round are eligible for fifth round.
I have surrendered a seat  for fourth round but did not get any seat, can  I participate in fifth round?
Yes, you can participate in fifth round, if you have not withdrawn/claimed refund. You should fill the fresh choices judiciously. You will be considered for seat allotment in the fifth round as per your fresh choices. Seat allotment will be done based on your fresh choices only.
I have not got any seat during the first four rounds.  How can I participate in the fifth round?
Your choices will be automatically unlocked from July 29, 2010. Your earlier choices are deleted. You must fill fresh choices again and lock them before August 1, 2010, 5.00 PM. Seat allotment will be done based on your fresh choices only.
Will my old choices be considered for fifth round?
No. All your old choices which you had filled before fourth round will be deleted. You shall fill new choices afresh for fifth round. If you do not fill fresh choices, then, you will not get any seat allotment in the fifth round.
What is the basis of modifying choices for the fifth round?
You are advised to check the following data from CCB website and follow the process.

1) While filling the choices you will be able to see all the choices of institute and branches. However, selection of choices should be made judiciously after your own assessment and liking so that you can get allotment as per your overall AIR. Number of vacancies is dynamic in nature and may increase based on cancellations.

2) The overall AIR at which the branch / institute of your interest was allotted in the fourth round i.e. closing AIR (Overall) in the respective category / quota.
-This will give you some idea about the possibility of your getting a seat if the allotted ranker cancels the seat (provided your rank is close to the presently allotted rank)

3) To fill the sufficient number of choices based on your interest and liking with regard to institute and branch considering your overall AIR. If the candidate does not fill sufficient number of choices then there is a possibility that he/she may not get any seat. Thus, in their own interest, the candidate must fill sufficiently large number of choices in which they are interested.

4) There may be possibility that vacancies are arising in the lower preferred branches as four rounds are over, therefore, candidates should fill sufficient number of choices covering all available branches of the institute to avoid non-allotment of seat.

What if I do not get any seat in the fifth round?
You should wait for further announcement on the CCB website after the fifth round.
What should I do if I am allotted a seat in the fifth round?
You have to report directly to the allotted institute from  August 3 to 7, 2010.
Those candidates who surrendered allotted seat have to submit receipt letter and pay remaining fee. Those candidates who got a seat for the first time in Round 5 have to get documents verified and pay full fee of the allotted institute.
Submit choice of branches within the institute, if desired. Start attending classes immediately.
What if I do not report to the allotted institute after seat allotment in the fifth round?
Your allotment will be cancelled and you will not be eligible for the subsequent rounds, if any.
